World Mechanics

What happens before my character makes the wish?
Your character is pulled to the world between worlds at the moment of their greatest emotional potential: a wish has formed in their heart, and Kyuubey has come to hear it. The world between worlds is an empty void devoid of any and all life, save for you and Kyuubey.

What will Kyuubey tell my character about the contract?
The bare bones. Kyuubey is exceptionally evasive. He will tell half-truths and omit vital sections of it where it suits him. He will inform your character that if they make the contract, a miracle will occur. However, in exchange for this miracle, they must leave their world and come fight with the power of that miracle as a Magi. He will give the barest of explanations about Nightmares, the briefest of nods towards this being a contractual obligation for life, and will give no details on the process of it. It's a very invigorating and inviting spiel, crafted in a way that even the best of skeptics most likely won't question it.

He says that the world you're going to is in need of powerful hearts such as yours, and that this wish is one that must be made willingly.

Is there an option to back out of making a wish?
Technically, yes. A character can always refuse. However, refusing means the character won't make the wish and thus won't be in the game.

Once a wish is made, there is no way to break the contract.

So what happens when they make the wish?
Your character will feel agonizing pain and begin lose consciousness as they fall between worlds, with Kyuubey explaining the very basics of the soul gem to them. They'll wake up in town. From the explanation, they will know that they now have a soul gem, which is the source of their magic and must be kept pure. They will also know about housing and their duties as a magi.

Are there limits to wishes? Can a character wish to rule an entire dimension and have it granted?
Wishes like that would only be able to be granted in unconventional ways. For example, take the houses that the magi are given - they are, in a sense, "an entire dimension" that the character could rule over, since they exist outside the rules of reality and give their owners absolute control over their floor plan, contents, and so on. For the purposes of granting that wish, that could be treated as the separate dimension the character desired. Another way in which it might be possible to grant that wish would be to give the character access to a hammerspace-like power that would allow them to access a tiny pocket dimension that only they and their friends could enter. Ruling over such a place would be meaningless, but it would nonetheless fulfill the conditions of the wish.

In other words, for big wishes, thinking outside the box is key!

Do we get magical costumes?
You sure do! The look of your costume is entirely up to you!

Where does my character arrive at?
Your character can arrive anywhere around town! It could be in their house, in a tree, on the roof of the house - the possibilities are limitless!

Do they already have access to magic? To mirrors?
Absolutely! They can begin communication immediately.

Can Kyuubey be found within the town?
No. Kyuubey cannot be found anywhere within Nyoi-cho.

Is my character aware that their soul is now separated from their body?
No. Kyuubey did not and will not divulge this information.

What happens if my character tries to distance themselves from their soulgem?
They will be unable to. The character will feel suddenly anxious of the action. Characters can physically not part themselves from their soulgem.

Are there any limits on the kinds of characters I can apply for?
While we accept canon, AU, and CRAU characters, we're limiting players to one character per canon.

Are multiples of the same character allowed?
Sort of! We allow up to three versions of the same character - a canon version, an AU version, and a CRAU version. In the event that the character being apped has a "canon AU" version, we may potentially grant them a fourth slot.

What if I want to app a character from the existing Puella Magi franchise? What if they're a CRAU?
You can absolutely do so! However, the characters will not remember the events of their world quite the same way. Canon Puella Magi characters will not remember the existence of witches, the purpose of a soul gem, or the ultimate fate of magical girls. This is for the sake of fairness and to prevent infomodding. There is player freedom as to how you would like to run with this: they could believe that they are natives of this world, as they did in Rebellion Story, or they could believe that they were granted a second wish by separate entities and are now living as a true Magical Girl, whereas before the wishmakers were just impostors.

My character is an alien/an android/a beastman/a sentient talking animal. What do I do?
Regardless of what their actual appearance is like, your character will appear as human to the non-magi residences of Nyoi-cho. It's up to you if you want to humanize them in-game.

The one restriction we have is that, given the fact that we are working within an environment made for humans, characters do have to be able to feasibly interact with human structures. Therefore, extremely large beings will need to be shrunk down to the size of tall humans.

What if my character has no soul/has many souls?
If a character has no soul, their consciousness/life force will still be transferred to the soul gem the way a soul might; the soul gem will function no differently.

If a soulless character steals another character's soul to fill in the void, that soul can function as said soulless character's soul for the purposes of the soul gem.

Multiple/excess souls will be treated in the same way that extra belongings and powers are treated - they're simply gone.

My character has powers in canon. Will they get to keep those?
No. All characters are nerfed down to the level of ordinary humans upon making their wish.

What if my character dies?
As long as their soul gem is kept intact, they can come back to life! If the soul gem is left untouched near the body, it will repair the body; at such point that it's finished doing so, the character will regain consciousness. The worse shape the body is in, the longer the process takes. If the soul gem is removed from the body, however, or the body has been destroyed beyond repair, then the soul gem will construct a new one; naturally, this is a lengthier process than simply repairing and reviving an injured body.

If your character invests in a passive power that increases their regenerative capability, they can shorten the amount of time it takes.

Are there any consequences for dying repeatedly?
If a character continually dies, they will begin to find it harder and harder to recall certain memories and will find that, increasingly, their old memories are starting to be replaced by fake ones that revolve around Nyoi-cho. This isn't an irreversible process; if a character spends inordinate amounts of time trying to sort out their memories again, have a castmate or other character around who can help them attempt to fill in the blanks, or let some time pass without dying again, they can regain their lost memories.

How does activity check work?
We're deviating slightly from the norm. Rather than giving us a comment count, we want to know what your character has been doing in the game. AC for this game is a paragraph or longer detailing what your character has been up to, who they've talked to, what they fought, etc, etc. Provide links.

Naturally, handwaved interactions cannot be used for AC.

What if people are character squatting?
If we're consistently seeing little to no activity or the only presented activity seems to be limited to one or two other pieces of CR, we will ask for additional samples. If those cannot be provided, the affected party will get a strike. If things do not improve after the strike, then the character will be removed from the game for failing to meet activity standards.

The goal of this AC is to encourage tagging out and have characters and players find a way to explore the setting and make it their own, rather than just count comments. We reserve the right to change it to a more traditional AC if we feel as if it is being abused, however.

That being said, there are activity incentives.

What activity incentives?
Item gains are received through characters being active and involved! Go here for the point breakdown!

Aside from that, characters can also request additions to the town.

Can you explain item regains to me?
Though our activity check isn't one done through comment counting, item regains are done through counting up your comments and submitting them to us. Making a post automatically earns one point towards an item regain.

Every 10 comments on the [community profile] soulgemmed community earns one point.

Every twenty comments to an IC inbox/appointments thread earns one point.

We are also counting threads from our test drive meme as we believe getting involved and providing a welcoming environment to new players or people testing new characters is important as well. Every fifteen comments earns one point.

These comments do not have to be consecutive to one thread, although we ask that you please only submit threads with more than three comments from them to be counted.

Can characters gain items that are not from their own world using this system?
For gaining items that are not from one's home world, characters would have to first invest in a location that would sell such items. For example, an armory would open up the ability to buy weaponry of all kinds, while those with an interest in magical items would want to invest in a magic shop of some sort.

Are points an In Character item?
No. They are a purely OOC construct.

Game Mechanics

Can you explain the expectations for powers a little more?

Certainly! Upon arrival to the game, your character will have three magical boons: two abilities resulting from and relating to their wish, and the ability to summon a weapon. For the sake of explanation, they will be referred to as passive ability, active ability and weapon respectively.

The passive ability is something innate to your character and is a byproduct of the miracle. Think of it like a status effect, special skill, or boost from an rpg. The ability to withstand extreme heat would count as an passive ability.

The active ability is something controlled consciously, relating to combat or support. This would be a spell or power attack in an RPG. The ability to create fire would count as a active ability. This must relate in some way to their wish, either thematically or elementally.

Finally, the weapon is the character's weapon. They are able to summon it upon transformation with as much ease or difficulty as the player wants it. A flamethrower would count as a weapon.

For example, Clara wished for her friend to be saved from a deadly illness by a miraculous operation. As a result, Clara also gains the passive ability to heal much faster than other magical girls. She has the active ability to summon an infinite amount of scalpels as the weapon is thematically tied to modern medicine.

In the context of this game, the healing factor would be the passive ability and is a direct result of her wish. The passive ability can be considered a "side-effect" of the wish and does not take up the power slot, and as said before, is more or less a buff running in the background.

The scalpel would be her weapon.

Her power is to summon an infinite amount of said scalpels, however, would fall under the active ability category! It's the duplication of one object an infinite amount of times, and so long as she has the magic to sustain it she can continue to summon them.

For another example, Adam, who was mute from a severe throat injury, wished to speak! The wish grants him the ability to speak, but it also gives him the passive ability to telepathically "speak" into people's minds from far away.

Adam gains a microphone as a weapon.

Adam also gains the active ability to heal other people as his throat injury was healed and he can now speak.

Dylan was blind from birth and wished "to see". Dylan can now miraculously use his eyes. Dylan also gains the passive ability to "see" into the past of objects.

Dylan's weapon is a sniper rifle.

Dylan's active ability is to physically manifest light (relating to light being tied into sight) into concentrated lasers. He does not need his primary weapon to do this.

Note that any abilities that directly affect another character (be they mind control, item reading, seeing past or future events) require the consent of the other player before activation. Please make an opt-in/out post for other players and don't suddenly use ooc knowledge of their characters without their consent. You are free to boss the NPCs around or find their tragic lost loves and missing shoes, but remember that player characters need player input!

If you can feasibly justify the powers relating to the wish then we will accept it, however you have to make the connection between wish and power very clear. However, it must relate to the wish in some way. Additional abilities will be gained down the line!

What uses magic?
The most obvious of this would be spells and combat abilities. These use significant amounts of magic and will create the most noticeable darkening of a soul gem.

However! Other things consume magic as well. Maintaining the space within their houses requires magic, as does the use of their bodies themselves. These are not nearly as damning as say, the constant use of spells, but it is enough to ensure that a magi must purify their gem at least once every two months.

Do characters get any "freebie powers"?
Magi are more durable and heal faster than a regular human. Injuries will indeed heal more quickly than they ordinarily would, but not by an extraordinary amount, so getting excessively injured would still be quite inconveniencing.

How does my character get more magical abilities?
New powers are awarded to characters for defeating tough bosses!

How does gem purifying work?
Soul gems need to be purified in order to maintain a magi's mental and physical health.

There are two ways a gem can be purified, the first being cleansing nightmares. As a nightmare disappears, it will take with it all of the corruption and darkness the soul gem has gathered.

The second is much harder. A soul gem can be cleansed with the use of a grief seed from a witch. Note that grief seeds have a limited amount of uses; a grief seed can either be used up in completely purifying a soul gem that's almost entirely run out of magic, or it can be divided up between multiple people at the cost of each soul gem being less cleansed overall.

How does death work?
As the characters souls are housed in their soulgem, a physical death is not that big of a deal. If the corpse is nearby and in relatively good condition, then the gem repairs the corpse and kickstarts a character's consciousness once the body is functional again. If the body has been completely destroyed or the soulgem has been moved, it will create a new body.

Do characters scar?
We are mostly leaving this up to player discretion. Characters possess the healing capability to avoid all scars, but if for some reason a character wants to leave the scar there, they would be able to do so.

What can my characters arrive with?
Nothing but the clothes on their back! No weapons, pets, duel disks, pokeballs, COMPs, or anything else of that nature allowed.

How are hiatuses and drops handled?
The maximum length for a hiatus is one month. If there are extenuating circumstances, exceptions may be made.

Hiatused characters have the option to "go native," which involves a magi losing all memories of their former life and their life as a hero of justice. They will thus lose the ability to utilize their soul gem and all the benefits and powers that it affords them, which includes losing the ability to access their houses. Such characters will instead find lodging with the native townsfolk, who are more than happy to help those who are in need of a place to stay. Trying to talk to such characters to snap them out of this state will yield little to no results, as they have completely lost their sense of self and are essentially on "auto-pilot." They will go about their days as if following a set routine that they cannot deviate from, and they will no longer react to outside stimulus the way an ordinary person might. Instead, they will approach everything with the same quiet serenity.

Dropped characters have the option to have their character permanently "go native" and be transferred to a different city. If they reapp, the character will return with all their memories intact.

If players are interested in having their characters go out a bang, they're free to contact the mods and discuss the option of having their character die permanently by becoming a witch. Note that this must be mod-approved and that you will not be able to re-app the character with their memory intact. You are free to re-app the character, but they will start fresh and will remember nothing about the setting or their CR. They will also be brought down to one power like all other new arrivals.

The Setting

Does this game have a network?
Yes! The magical "network" of this game is through mirrors. Characters are able to touch the surface of a mirror with the rune on their fingernail and transform it into a two-way mirror, enabling them to communicate with other magi in real-time. Non-magical beings will just see someone ranting to themselves, so it's not recommended to use the mirrors for communication in public. Many characters may find it convenient to carry around a small compact mirror in case of emergency.

The mirrors can also be used to project images from a character's imagination or memories.

Note, however, that the mirrors can be unreliable. While they're the best way to alert all active magi of something, they cannot store messages. This means that if someone conveniently managed to miss the message or forgot parts of it, they would not be able to play it back later. The mirrors also do not have any privacy features: either the messages are not "uploaded" and are thus only available to people in the same room looking at the same mirror, or they are uploaded and available to every magi in town.

Okay, but does the game have a technologically based network?
Yes! As magic tends to be unreliable and can perhaps be a little too open, characters are encouraged to purchase cellphones or use their houses to create something with an internet connection. Nyoi-cho does have the internet, meaning that forums, message boards, text messaging and the like is freely available! If a character tries to look up information on the town, they will find it strangely sparse.

You said characters get houses. What do these houses look like?
Outside, the houses are nothing remarkable. They're relatively small one-story houses, each identical to the next. The one difference between them is what lies in place of a doorknob - a gem, the exact same shape and color as its owner's.

How do characters get in?
The gems on the doors react to the touch of the house's owner. It will open automatically at their touch.

What do they look like inside?
Upon entry, the house will automatically shape itself to suit what a Magi believes a house to be. If they're accustomed to a lavish mansion, then that is what they will get. If they're used to a bachelor apartment, that's what they will see.

This is not how the space stays.

Everything within the house is magical in nature and is therefore malleable. Thus, that bachelor apartment could become the mansion the character has always dreamed of.

What is the house capable of creating?
The houses are capable of creating just about anything your character desires! It's not just limited to houses - if you wanted a theme park, you could feasibly make a theme park. It is, however, incredibly taxing to maintain large structures and environments and is not recommended.

Nothing created within the houses can be taken out of the houses.

What are the people of the town like?
The people of Nyoi-cho seem relatively normal at first glance. They don't seem to be aware of the influx of nightmares physically manifesting, though they will speak about having bad dreams lately if asked. The majority of the town will go about their day and interact in a relatively normal fashion with other townsfolk, although their interactions with the magi themselves seem to strain them.

They are not aware of magic and cannot appear to see it. Transforming in front of them or using any sort of magic in their vicinity will get no reaction.

Will the townspeople react to items being taken from places that don't have a clear owner?
The townspeople might make small remarks about it and see about chipping in to get the missing items replaced, but they won't be terribly upset.

How would the townspeople react to swindling or thievery from a Magi?
If a character attempted to convince shopkeepers to donate furniture or money to their cause, they'd be happy to acquiesce! They would not be willing to give too much money, or more than an unused end-table or something. Distracting them or confusing them is very possible! Stealing from them or their home is very possible as well, though if they catch the Magi there will be consequences. Characters may be barred from stores or chased away from areas they have thieved from.

Can you tell me more about the town itself?
The town is a mixture of old and new and is the very definition of "suburban". The roads are small - all made for walking, not driving. While all of the magi houses appear the same, the rest of the town has some minute variety. There are streets that are wealthier than others, with larger houses and more defined yards, and there are streets that are much poorer and in need of repair.

Size-wise, it has a population of less than five thousand.

Is there a language barrier in the town?
Everyone defaults to one language.

What is available in the town?
About what you would expect: a school, a hospital, a grocery store, a general store for all your needs, and a boutique for clothing. There are a number of smaller specialty shops gearing towards candy, meats, and a few small restaurants. There is enough empty space to permit characters to open up shops should they gain the means to do so.

If someone would like to request a location, either run by NPCs or player run, please go locations page and fill out the form!

What is the school like?
It is a small Japanese style school. The school system is based off of modern day Japan's school, though the building is somewhat worn and dated.

Can characters find their canon/other characters canons within the town? What entertainment can they find?
No. To prevent fourth walling, as long as it isn't a specific existing series, one could find such a thing. For instance, you wouldn't find anything Pretty Cure related, but Cutie Pure would be fine.

Can my character upload videos about Nyoi-cho onto Youtube?
No. Anything recording magic or showing the town will not be able to be uploaded to the internet.

Is there currency?
Yes. Characters are encouraged to get jobs within the city to buy things in the real world. They can be handwaved in gameplay. We will not be policing this unless players are actively abusing the system.

Are characters given any money to start with?
No.

What lies outside the town?
Tsukudo-cho lies to the west and Noroi-cho lies to the north. Both towns can be reached by train. Tsukudo-cho is said to be home to a beautiful ski resort, which makes it a popular vacation spot in the winter. Little is known about Noroi-cho.

Characters who try to leave the town on foot will find themselves looped around to the opposite side of town. Characters who try to leave via the trains will find difficulty in procuring a ticket; please contact the mods if a character wishes to investigate the trains or try to find a way to procure a ticket or other method of getting onto the train.

Witches and Nightmares

How often will we be fighting Nightmares?
Minor Nightmares are a nightly occurrence. Characters were brought in to fight them and so it's entirely possible that your character is out every night fighting them.

So what is a Nightmare exactly?
A Nightmare is a buildup of stress and negative emotion manifested into physical form. Much like a normal Nightmare, they only occur while someone is asleep. Most Nightmares start off as peaceful dreams.

Do Nightmares appear during the day?
No. During daylight hours, Nightmares are dormant. They become active as night falls.

What happens if the dreamer wakes up?
They cannot. Once someone has a Nightmare, they are trapped within their own personal hell until the beast is defeated.

So what does a Nightmare look like to the outside world?
The physical body of the dreamer is left behind - the Nightmare is an affectation of the soul, not the flesh. The person having the Nightmare will appear to be in deep, deep sleep and will not be able to be awoken by normal means.

The Nightmare itself is contained within its Nightmarescape. Like the houses, the area it's contained in will appear normal on the outside. The point of entry is unmarked, although Magi are able to sense it and will be able to enter with ease. Parts of the Nightmare may reflect the real world, and if the Nightmare is powerful enough, it can even influence those corresponding places. However, for the most part it is largely within its own contained domain.

What does the Nightmarescape look like?
It varies from person to person. A Nightmarescape will always be a reflection of its dreamer. Elements that are important to that person will be present in abstract fashion. This scene is a good representation of the look and feel of the average nightmare characters will encounter.

What happens after the Nightmare is defeated?
After the Nightmare is destroyed, the Nightmarescape will transform into a happy dream. The hope caused by this dream will cleanse nearby soul gems of any corruption. The Nightmarescape will then fade away, and characters will return to their point of entry. See canon for what this looks like.

Can my character turn into a Nightmare?
Absolutely! Not even the best of us are exempt from nightmares. For Magi, the process is slightly different. Transformation into a Nightmare does not necessarily have to occur while a Magi is asleep, although it must happen at a time of impaired judgement such as the very early morning or late night.

Player run nightmares are considered mini-events, and as such, must be requested here.

THE WITCHES.

Can my character become a witch?
Yes. It is possible for a player character to become a witch.

However, there is no way to reverse the process. Becoming a witch can only be done by way of a specialized drop - though the character can be reapplied for at a later date, they will have to start fresh as a new "version" of that character with a new canon point and wish.

What constitutes becoming a witch?
A character who gives into despair so completely that they can not be purified will become a witch.

I want to drop my character! How can my character become a witch?
Please contact the mods, either via the mod contact page or PM. Witch events are essentially full scale player run events - please come to us with a full concept of what you want to do. If we find the information given is insufficient or unworkable, we reserve the right to make changes to or deny the event.
